The
Union Deposit Cemetery is located in South Hanover Township on State Route 39, a mile
north of the Swatara Creek. Many early Derry Township residents were buried there.
An old iron fence and a decorative arch bearing the cemetery's
name separate this resting place from a busy roadway. There are
few burials in this cemetery any longer according to the volunteer
caretaker whose ancestors are among the many who rest here.
Volunteers
from Derry Township Historical Society recorded this cemetery
from 2000 through 2004, returning a number of times to confirm
recordings and decipher the German script in which many of the
stones are carved. They compared their records to those published
in the Keystone Seekers , a publication of the
Capital Area Genealogical Society and other sources. Lists of
burials made by Oscar Stroh, Alice Stroh and a list made from
published obituaries were also cross-referenced and compared.

The cemetery is
documented on the map of South Hanover Township in the
Dauphin County Historical Atlas
of 1875, p. 53. In 2004,
approximately 1800 individuals were recorded in this cemetery.
